PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES IN CCM
With just under a year to go to the presidential elections in October 1995, the problem of who to nominate for the party's presidential ticket is a real headache for Chama cha Mapidunzi (CCM), the government party. The constitution forbids the present head of state, Ali Hassan Mwinyi, from standing again and the most likely candidates to succeed him appear to be the CCM deputy chairman John Malecela (who is also prime minister and first deputy president of Tanzania), and the CCM secretary general (and minister in the president's office) Horace Kolimba.
