Chief editor of The Indian Ocean Newsletter since 1990, Francis Soler has acquired extensive political expertise concerning a good 15 East and Southern African nations and the Indian Ocean islands. With that background he contributes to the annual supplement in Le Monde (Bilan du Monde) as well as to L'Etat du Monde (La Decouverte).
He is regularly interviewed by French and international television and radio stations. His interest focused on North Africa and then on sub-Saharan Africa in the mid-1970s as he pursued his university studies. Since that period Soler has visited numerous African countries. Starting from the early 1980s he began specializing in southern Africa and the Indian Ocean. He covered such issues as Zimbabwe's independence, political shifts in Mauritius and the rise of a new black union movement in South Africa. |
