Ten years after they arrived in power in Khartoum, head of state general Omar Hassan Al Bachir and his former mentor Hassan Al Turabi are facing each other in a struggle for power which could end up any way. To prevent Parliament, where Al Turabi is Speaker, adopting two constitutional amendments (election of provincial governors and a prime minister responsible to Parliament) which he disagreed with, the president simply dissolved the chamber on December 13, the day before MPs were due to vote (ION 880).
