COUNTRY CUT IN TWO

Provisional early returns from Mozambique's general election on December 3-4 reveal a country still politically sliced in two. Incumbent head of state Joaquim Chissano and his FRELIMO government party are largely ahead of the pack in the southern provinces (Gaza, Inhambane, Maputo) and perhaps also in Cabo Delgado (in the north), but appear to have been beaten in five central and northern provinces (Manica, Nampula, Sofala, Tete, Zambezia) by their rivals the RENAMO opposition party and its leader Afonso Dhlakama. (...)   [470 words]   [€5]
