COMFORTABLE VICTORY FOR CHISSANO

Mozambique's outgoing head of state Joaquim Chissano is expected to be proclaimed the winner, very probably after ballot-counting for the first run of the multiparty presidential election, held on October 27 to 28, is completed next week. On the basis of nearly half the ballots cast in urban polling stations, Chissano would be claiming 59 percent of the votes, against 32 percent for his rival, RENAMO leader Afonso Dhlakama. (...)   [1001 words]   [€8]
