Washington Versus Al Barakat

The United States government has turned its tracking the financial networks of the Islamic terrorist Osama bin Laden towards Somalia and its Awallah system of fund transfers based upon trust. During a simultaneous operation in several cities of the country and elsewhere – Switzerland, the Bahamas, Dubai – on November 7, it closed the offices and seized the accounts of Al Barakat, the largest fund transfer firm of the Somalian diaspora, which was founded in 1992 and is used by the United Nations, NGOs, and press agencies with relations in Somalia. (...)   [700 words]   [€8]
