The future of the joint G5 Sahel force had created sharp tensions between rival EU bodies over the past few months. The row has resurfaced just as Burkina Faso and Niger have announced they are withdrawing from the organisation, which resulted in its dissolution on 6 December.

Saudis strengthen foothold in G5 Sahel Defense College

The G5 Sahel Defense College in Nouakchott, which trains 40 officer cadets from West African armies each year, is currently hosting 20 colonels from the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces (SAAF). Military collaboration between Mauritania and Riyadh is growing.
