Sassou Nguesso's strategy to win in 2016

Sassou focuses on 2016

Well ensconced in his presidential office, Congo-B's Denis Sassou Nguesso hasn't thought for a moment of standing down for the election in 2016 even though the 2002 Constitution bans him from seeking a new term as president. With help from his inner circle, the 70-year-old strongman in Brazzaville is putting the final touches strategy for a third run for the office, as this report from West Africa Newsletter makes abundantly clear.

Following his PCT's party crushing victory in legislative elections in August, 2012 - which will make it child's play for Sassou to modify the Constitution - he is free to act as he pleases at home. With generals from the Forces Armees Congolaises (FAC) brought to heel, he has crushed any presidential ambitions among his followers while intimidating his opponents. He now has to burnish his image as a "god father" in the sub-region, so as to curry favour with the international community.
