Snapshot of players in post-electoral crisis

Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, Djibouti President

Ever since Djibouti's legislative ballot in February, 2013 and its controversial outcome, president Ismaïl Omar Guelleh (IOG) has been dogged by the worst post-electoral crisis of his 15-years rule.

The methods he has usually employed against his opponents (crackdowns and divide-and-rule tactics) haven't produced the results he expected and the opposition Union pour le Salut National (USN) coalition has held its ground despite its internal divisions and the pressure being brought to bear on it.

As a result, the long-standing crisis has poisoned the political atmosphere in a country generally lauded for its stability. And it will be difficult for Guelleh to let matters slide with a presidential election - in which he will not normally stand - scheduled for 2017.
The following report casts a spotlight on the political crisis in the former "sand-box" of France's armed forces which has gradually become a military control tower of sorts over the region for the United States and a number of other nations.
