Former generals who took part in Frelimo's struggle for independence in Mozambique in the 1970s have long traded in their uniforms for business suits. More recently, however, several have moved into the booming mining sector to act as go- betweens for big foreign groups. Their local connections, whether political or family in nature, make it easier for mining companies to win licenses and get around red tape. Such men as Jacinto Veloso, Alberto Joaquim Chipande and Tobias Dai have stood out as leading mining industry intermediaries.
