Behind the scenes in French army's high-risk withdrawal from Niger

The withdrawal of French forces from Niger, which began in October, has not so far run into any obstacles. The highly sensitive operation, which requires the services of a handful of private sector contractors, is nevertheless a major logistical challenge.

When it set up a renewable energy subsidiary in 2021, the Nigerian Oando group clearly set out its intention to develop its green energy business. For the time being, however, it is doing as little as possible in this area on the grounds it is not getting any help from the authorities.

The Egyptian president is negotiating to secure large foreign currency deposits from several Gulf states. Egypt's debt puts it on the back foot in its tug-of-war with the United States and Israel over the acceptance of Palestinian refugees from Gaza into Sinai.
