The Swiss commodities giant, historically the main buyer of CMT's lead and zinc, has resumed contact with the company led by Abdellah Mouttaqi. This allows the Moroccan miner to break with Shaba Trading, a business intermediary firm owned by German Chaparro, one of CMT's independent directors.

Conakry gives green light to Kanté and Sinohydro to resume their bauxite operations

Despite ongoing legal proceedings, GIC, led by former mining minister Ahmed Kanté, has signed a settlement agreement with the authorities to secure a position in the country's second largest bauxite mining complex. At a standstill since 1 April 2025, the project has received financial support from the Chinese state-owned giant.

The American-Canadian billionaire has managed to wrest significant concessions from Liberian President Joseph Boakai to ship the iron ore he plans to extract from one of his deposits. But his teams have not yet managed to persuade the Guinean authorities to authorise production.

Following the deaths of at least 30 artisanal miners in November in a mine in Lualaba, MP Serge Nkonde Chembo has set up a committee of inquiry, which is expected to visit the site soon.
