Mnangagwa struggles to rule over bitterly divided party as he eyes re-election

Emmerson Mnangagwa is seeking to consolidate his position in his increasingly divided party, as some inside the party contest the results of elections to pick ZANU-PF provincial leaders. It will be no easy task, given that vice-president Constantino Chiwenga is barely concealing his ambition to become Zimbabwe's next head of state.

It is shaping up to be a bruising year for Wafula Chebukati, whose job it is to ensure a free and fair general election in August after an extremely long and divisive campaign. The Electoral Commission head is already in the sights of the frontrunners, namely Deputy President William Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta's favoured successor, Raila Odinga.
