Bruno Le Maire went to Ivory Coast last month to bang the drum for French business. His trip sped up the attribution of a vast contract to improve the road between Abidjan and San Pedro, the world's busiest cocoa port.

The former French president played no direct part in the process of normalising relations between France and Rwanda, which was finalised by Emmanuel Macron at the end of May. He nevertheless acted as a knowledgeable and consulted "observer" throughout the negotiation process.
