Ghana's 16,000-strong army has become one of the main levers of Accra's outsized diplomatic influence in Africa and beyond, with nearly 3,000 soldiers deployed across a dozen UN missions. President Nana Akufo-Addo is particularly fond of his country's armed forces and increasingly relies on his Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Obed Akwa.
