Backed by senior officials at the National Security Council and the State Department, US operator Virtus Minerals must still secure the approval of Félix Tshisekedi's government to proceed to the acquisition of Chemaf's copper and cobalt mines.

While Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Abdourahamane Tiani wished to highlight the trans-Saharan gas pipeline project as a means of sealing their reconciliation, it was in fact Algerian security officials who played a decisive role in maintaining and reviving relations between the two neighbours.
