Minister Massassa rattles tax stability for newcomers to Gabon oil
Oil companies wanting to invest in Gabon risk being put off by the government's new tax provisions that have gone under the radar.
With the exception of Namibia and Mozambique, Africa has ceased to be attractive to US oil companies, which are gradually withdrawing from the market. This strategy is the opposite of that adopted by the Chinese and Russians, which are continuing to push ahead.
Under the management of the Franco-British company since December, Gabon's main terminal for oil exports has suffered a leak of some 50,000 m3 of crude. With one of the country's key facilities out of action, Perenco and the Gabonese authorities have been heavily criticised for their lack of transparency over the circumstances of the accident and its social, environmental and economic impact.
