AFRICOM head Townsend pulls every political and military string to counter growing Chinese influence

The head of the US military command for Africa embarked on a major African tour in May that took him from Djibouti to Angola via Somalia, Kenya and Rwanda. The aim was to brief American diplomats and high-ranking officers of the US Army on how to strengthen security cooperation with African partners in order to limit the progress of Chinese influence in East and Southern Africa.

General Stephen Townsend, the head of the United States Military Command for Africa (AFRICOM), made a speech in the House of Representatives in Washington in April in which he spoke of the massive investments made by China in East Africa in its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
