How Medavia won the race to reopen a regular Europe-Libya flight route
The small airline, a Maltese subsidiary of the Libyan sovereign fund LIA, shot past Alitalia and Air Malta to start up its route on 20 September.
Prime Education, a company owned by Tevfik Sekerci, was contracted to train pilots and civil aviation executives. Instead, it invested most of the €18m the state-owned EACS gave it for this purpose in Istanbul-based land and property funds.
Libyan state-owned airline EACS is set to retake possession of the Airbus A340 which served as Muammar Gaddafi's presidential jet. The aircraft's return is being held up, however, by the unwillingness of the French embassy in Libya to issue visas for the company's technicians.
