Managem and Glencore fine-tune recycled cobalt project
In a bid to improve its image, the Swiss raw materials giant Glencore has teamed up with Morocco's Managem to produce 1,200 tonnes of recycled cobalt.
The Aya Gold & Silver boss plans to invest $140m to quintuple production at his Zgounder silver mine by 2024. He is continuing his exploration campaigns, hoping to make discoveries that will attract other Canadian juniors to Morocco, as he did in Burkina Faso.
Repelled by DRC mines' bad reputation, BMW has turned to Morocco and Australia for its cobalt supplies, while Volkswagen prefers to deal with Chinese battery manufacturers. At the same time through their supplier BASF, the car makers are funding a project to support Congolese artisanal mining cooperatives, managed by German development agency GIZ.
