Tebboune's Paris trip faces further delays as tiff with army chief continues

Abdelmadjid Tebboune's visit to France, which had already been pushed back to June, is set to be postponed again. Scheduling problems are supposedly to blame but, behind the scenes, tensions between the Algerian president and his army chief Saïd Chengriha could also be playing a role.

A diplomatic détente between Algeria and France has failed to resolve a row over the former's extradition requests to the latter. The case of the Franco-Algerian opposition figure Amira Bouraoui, who was recently exfiltrated to France, has only poured fuel on the fire.

The decrees appointing the commission's French and Algerian experts have still not been published.

After he spoke by phone with President Emmanuel Macron this week, it's looking increasingly certain that Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune will pay an official visit to France. To pave the way, Algerian army chief Said Chengriha is due in Paris later this month, while a top French foreign ministry official is expected in Algiers.
