Former Tanzanian head of state Jakaya Kikwete, who was sidelined during the presidency of John Magufuli, has become an unofficial adviser to new president Samia Suluhu Hassan. He has been pressing for China Merchants' giant Bagamoyo port project, blocked under Magufuli, to resume.

Moez Chakchouk takes charge at the port of Radès to ensure it gets $330m in US aid

Foued Othman, adviser to transport minister Moez Chakchouk, is to move to the ports and merchant marine office. His job will be to ensure that the partial privatisation planned for the port of Rades is carried out, enabling it to receive a $330m grant from the US's Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

The transport minister Moez Chakchouk is struggling to make progress on the Enfidha deepwater port project, which has been in the pipeline for nearly two decades now. And the American donation of $324m for expanding the port of Radès is conditional on its privatisation, which is unacceptable to the UGTT union.
