Unlike his predecessors, since Rivo Radanielina was appointed interim MD of Jirama in November 2021, he has had to deal with angry citizens in the wake of repeated power outages. State-run Jirama handles only a portion of the country's power supply (a nameplate capacity in 2017 of 570 MW, 60% of it thermal and 40% hydroelectric), but has a monopoly over the transportation and distribution of power. Its grid is old and worn and this leads to many blackouts.
