Russia strives to keep a foothold in oil and defence
As its relations with Washington warm, Luanda is trying to cut its longstanding energy and military ties with Moscow.
Gazprom is a state-owned Russian oil company and one of the few Russian commodities giants to have expanded its operations into Africa from its London base. The results have been mixed: its attempts to establish itself in Nigeria and Namibia came to nothing, with its main successes in Africa taking the form of oil trading contracts, in Cameroon in particular.
