Ex-president Salou Djibo prepares his comeback
Salou Djibo, who once toppled Mamadou Tandja in a coup d'état, plans to return to Niger to get his political party back on its feet after several years working for ECOWAS in Abuja.
The two heavyweights of the Nigerien opposition, who were allies in the last presidential election, have not spoken to each other since April. They have fallen out over the strategy to adopt in relation to the Nigerien president Mohamed Bazoum.
If Mohamed Bazoum, the candidate of the Parti Nigérien pour la Démocratie et le Socialisme (PNDS) of outgoing President Mahamadou Issoufou, wins the second round of the presidential election against Mahamane Ousmane on 21 February, he intends to turn Niger into an electricty-exporting country.
