Bamako tries to save its good relations with Nouakchott

Mauritanian head of state Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, who, until now, has opted for dialogue with the regime in Mali, could change position following a recent border incident in which a number of Mauritanians lost their lives. Mali has already sent a mission to Nouakchott.

Ghazouani strives to get Bamako back into G5 Sahel

The president of Mauritania and current chair of the G5 Sahel has made a priority of reintegrating Mali into the alliance. To achieve this, he has mobilised a loyal team of diplomats, military officers and religious leaders.

Ghazouani makes fresh attempt to revive G5 Sahel

The G5 Sahel alliance has been virtually inoperative since Mali withdrew from it, but Mauritanian president Mohamed Ould Ghazouani is striving - not without difficulty - to revive it. He wants the organisation's presidency transferred from Chad to Niger at a summit meeting to be held next February.

Yamoussa Camara has in less than a year become one of the most influential figures in Mali's Koulouba presidential palace. Junta leader Assimi Goïta made him his permanent secretary last year, and he advises the five putschist colonels he had under his command at a military high school in the 1990s.

The French president will visit Bamako from 20 to 21 December. In the Malian capital, he will meet interim president Assimi Goita for the first time to discuss the ongoing talks between his junta and the Russian paramilitary group Wagner.
