Only a chosen few from junta leader Mamadi Doumbouya's innermost circle were kept in the loop when, just after his rise to power via a coup d'état in September 2021, he made the businessman his special adviser. No official communication or presidential decree was released to announce the arrival of the one who Guinea's political and military elite refer to as "Papa Fofana".

Since then, the man who described himself
