DRC gold at heart of Museveni and Kagame's new showdown

Rwanda and Uganda are engaged in a tug of war over who will host the main transit route for gold mined in the DRC before it is shipped out of Africa. Both countries want the lucrative business for themselves and are hoping to force Kinshasa to choose between them, with Kigali in the lead.

An unfailing ally of Omar al-Bashir's regime, Turkey has taken two years to re-establish relations with Sudan's transitional government. Ankara only managed to regain a foothold in Khartoum by promising substantial investments.

The meeting between Emmanuel Macron and Andry Rajoelina, due to take place on 27 August, promises to be electric. The Madagascan president's declared aim of retaking control of the Scattered Islands, currently administered by France, has resulted in a two-year standstill in bilateral relations.
