The African Union Commission, riding a wave of virulent criticism against US-Saudi mediation efforts on Sudan and amid the failure of various ceasefire agreements, is working on its own de-escalation plan, which Africa Intelligence has seen.

South Africa's Shamila Nair-Bedouelle, a UNESCO assistant director-general, has been demoted after accusations of harassment. Pretoria said the punishment was excessive and denounced the UN agency's "culture of fear and intimidation".

In what will be its sixth attempt to host the football World Cup, Morocco has teamed up with Spain and Portugal to place a joint bid for the 2030 tournament.
