UAE and China spar over Horn of Africa ports
Four months after opening the port of Berbera in Somaliland, DP World's chairman, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, tasked his teams to conduct a study on Chinese activism in the ports of the Horn of Africa.
On 7 and 8 January, the Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi will be trying to persuade Tanzanian president John Magufuli to resume construction works on the huge Bagamoyo deepwater port. Since he came to power, the project has been more or less constantly on hold.
At the request of the United States, American contractor Mission Essential plans to take on more Russian, Chinese and Turkish interpreters. Its aim is to gather more information about the activities of the three powers concerned in East Africa and elsewhere on the continent.
Following the failure of the humanitarian truce called for on March 18 by the United Nations to prevent the coronavirus (Covid-19) spreading in Libya, nothing seems likely to stop the fighting in Tripoli between Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA)
