Somaliland's SSC region enlists US lobbyists to appeal to Washington
Fighting has gripped the east of breakaway province Somaliland since late December. The conflict has regional repercussions and has been the subject of lobbying in Washington.
Somaliland's defence minister Abdiqani Mohamoud Aateye and the head the Somaliland National Armed Forces General Nuh Ismail Tani have contracted London-based consultancy firm Adam Smith International (ASI) to help steer the overhaul of its defence services.
The electoral crisis in Somalia and the parliamentary election in Somaliland have weakened the two incumbent presidents, who have fallen back on patriotic rhetoric that leaves little room for a potential rapprochement. However, the situation could work in favour of their opponents, who are more amenable to a resumption of dialogue.
For three days, the Kenyan head of state rolled out the red carpet for Somaliland president Muse Bihi Abdi. Bihi himself took advantage of the trip to meet one of the leaders of the opposition to Somali president Farmajo, with the help of Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga.
