João Lourenço was re-elected as president on 24 August with the smallest margin in the country's independent history. His MPLA party took 51% of the vote against the main opposition party UNITA and its candidate Alberto Costa Júnior's 43.9%. At his final election rally on 23 August, Lourenço proclaimed that "the right to occupy important positions in politics in the hierarchy of the Angolan state... must be reframed for the Angolan woman".
