Battle over appointment of Johnson Olony as Upper Nile governor jeopardizes peace agreement
Vice president Riek Machar is insisting on having army commander Johnson Olony as head of the oil-producing state of Upper Nile. South Sudanese president Salva Kiir has refused to approve the appointment, however, even though, in so doing, he risks endangering the country's fragile transition process.
