The remarkable warming of relations between Cotonou and the Alliance of Sahel States countries has resulted from the work put in for over a year behind the scenes by Benin's new president. Even when tensions were at an all-time high, he maintained close channels of communication with several Sahelian officials, particularly in Niger.
