Lisbon mayor organises African jamboree
Carlos Moedas is gearing up to welcome a dozen African leaders to the Portuguese capital for the annual CDI meeting, which will kick off on 24 February.
Africa Intelligence can reveal the existence of companies secretly set up in the United Arab Emirates on behalf of the family of former Angolan president José Eduardo dos Santos. The group behind these, wealth management firm Helin International, is under investigation in the United States, France, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
Since Moscow began its military offensive in Ukraine, numerous southern African entrepreneurs have had to freeze their investment projects in Russia or leave their positions as directors of companies under sanctions. Being separated from these wealthy Africans has entrenched the dichotomy of Russia's presence on the continent:
Embassies, international bodies, military support, language ties... Portugal is using all the resources at its disposal to maintain its position in Africa, particularly in its former colonies, where it still has strong economic links. Its resources are limited, however.
