When he succeeded Abdoulaye Wade as president in 2012, Macky Sall became supreme commander of the Armed Forces of Senegal. Since then, he has set about giving the army an image which is attractive to the international community, as exemplified by the extensive involvement of Senegalese soldiers in United Nations peacekeeping missions on the African continent. The army has also been burnishing its image as a model pupil in France, its long-standing partner.
