Bejaia port extension under way after foreign firms excluded
After years of delay, work has finally begun to enlarge the Algerian port of Bejaia. Plans for an international call for tenders open to foreign firms were mysteriously cancelled.
The China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) is at odds with the Algerian authorities over the delivery of the road linking Bejaia to the East-West motorway. With many hurdles hampering the works, the road may well end up taking several more years to complete.
The Algerian authorities on 15 August sealed shut the oilseed crushing plant built by the Cevital group in Béjaïa, and whose launch was initially planned for the end of 2022. They did so on the grounds that the project had not received all the required authorisations.
Algiers has been slow to make good on its ambitions to develop Sahel trade by building logistics hubs in the far south. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's government touted the grand plans as a means of boosting the country's influence in the region.
